Belgrade Attractions - The Serbian Academy of Sciences (SANU) building is an important cultural monument of Knez Mihailova Street. It was built in 1924 for the needs of the highest scientific institution such as the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts or formerly the Serbian Royal Academy. The main and unusual feature of the building is that the facade overlooks three streets, then a wide middle part with a large dome and rich facade decorations.
The Serbian Royal Academy was founded by decree of King Milan Obrenovic, to whom he donated land in order to build a building to achieve his educational goals. The first president of the Academy was Josif Pancic. Among the first academics were named Stojan Novakovic, Matija Ban, Davornin Jenko, Ljubomir Nenadovic. Before the construction of the building in Knez Mihailova Street for the needs of SASA, the premises in Brankova Street were used, which were later demolished.
The building of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts introduced to Belgrade architecture the spirit of secessionism and French decorativeism.
