Belgrade Attractions - The National Theater is located in the very center of Belgrade and together with Knez Mihailova Street and the monument to Prince Mihailo Obrenovic, makes it the most beautiful and visited pedestrian zone in the capital. It is located on Francuska Street where the Stambol Gate used to be. The theater itself is divided into two scenes - the Grand Stage and the "Rasa Plaovic" Scene and three artistic units - Drama, Opera and Ballet.
The National Theater building was built in 1868 as a permanent professional theater. The remains of the former Stambol Gate were built at the base of the building, symbolizing victory over centuries of Turkish rule. The space in front of the theater was occupied by Theater Square, formerly Belgrade's main square. In terms of architectural composition, decoration and façade, the building is much reminiscent of the famous La Scala Theater of Milan. The first performance that was performed was "The Posthumous Glory of Prince Michael" by Djordje Maletic, as well as "Serbian Overture" by composer Dragutin Res.
The interior of the theater is extremely imposing. The interior follows the Italian model, which emphasizes a refined taste for the decoration and comfort of the theater. The royal lodges were originally decorated with draperies, crowns and details from Viennese art workshops. The ceilings are decorated with plaster decoration with gilding, and a special charm was brought by the chandeliers.
