Belgrade Attractions - The Karamata family house from the list Belgrade Attractions consists of three related parts linked together by a unique elaborate facade and a common main entrance. The ground floor part, one-storey portion with a simple roof and a one-part with mansard roof are connected to a single unit that makes the Karamata family house from the list Belgrade Attractions. In 1763, the highest part of the house was built by Kuzman Jovanovic, a wealthy merchant from Zemun, the building was purchased in 1772 by Dimitrije Karamata for 4000 florins, a migrant of Turkish Aegean Macedonia.
The house is still owned by the family Karamata, whose seventh generation are still living there. Plans of Zemun from the 18th century show the same dimensions that the house has to this day, the son of Dimitrije Karamat built an additional floor in 1827, and carried out a complete renovation and refurbishment of the building in the central part of the house.
The unique facade from this period along with the gate above which is the year 1827 survived to this day. The facade is done in the classical style and the spirit of the Empire, while the rest of the building as a whole is in the style typical of Baroque residential buildings. There was a Baroque gate on the eastern part of the building. Architects of the house are not known and the original plans were never found. The Karamata family house is one of the most important monuments of Zemun.
During the Austro-Turkish war in the house of the family Karamat, in September 1789, the house was a short term home to the Emperor Joseph II, son of Maria Theresa and brother of Marie Antoinette. Besides Joseph II at the Karamata family house stayed the Crown Prince, later Emperor Franz II. The reason for accommodating Emperor Joseph II was a war council. In his honor, later, on the ceiling of the large room, on the first floor, an emblem was installed, carved and painted in wood, a double-headed Austrian eagle with the symbols of the monarchy.
During the Serbian movement in the period between the 1848 to 1849 the house was inhabited by the Serbian Patriarch Joseph Rajačić, together with the board, because of the Main National reposal of Serbian Vojvodina sessions that were held at the Karamata family house, whose cashier was Atanas Karamat.
The Karamata family house in addition to other important historical figures was home for Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic as well as Branko Radičević. Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic stayed there with his daughter Mina.
