Belgrade Attractions - Belgrade's oldest bookstore - Geca Kon Bookstore - is on the list of landmarks in Belgrade. It has been located at the same address for decades, which is Knez Mihailova 12. Geca Kon was a Serbian publisher. He opened the bookstore in 1901 for Serbian and foreign literature at Knez Mihailova No. 1 and quickly became the largest Serbian and Yugoslav publisher. The company was named after Branislav Nusic, Slobodan Jovanovic, Milos Crnjanski and many other prominent Serbian figures.
The first bookstore was called "Gece Kona Publishing Bookstore". In order to realize his idea, Geca Kon invited writers from Serbia and Croatia to send him one copy of his work, and he published the first book in 1905 - "The Syntax of the Serbian Language for Secondary Schools" by Janko P. Lukic. Only two years later, the first translated book "The Ruler" by Nikola Machiavelli was published. Geca Kon is responsible for opening several libraries in Belgrade and for publishing collected works by Slobodan Jovanovic, Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, Jovan Skerlic, Sigumnd Freud, Branislav Nusic, Karl Marx.
Geco Kon was sentenced twice to prison in concentration camps during two world wars. During World War I, his bookstore was closed and books burned. Upon his release from prison, he opened the "Geca Kon A.D Publishing and Bookstore." He is also known for being the first person to buy a luxury car in Belgrade. Before World War II, the bookstore Geca Kona was the largest and most famous bookstore in the Balkans.
